Pittsburgh Brewers Host Beer Sampling for Charity

Knocking back a couple of brews has never been more charitable.

The eighth annual Brewing Up A Cure craft beer festival, this Saturday at PPG’s Wintergarden in Downtown Pittsburgh, will feature more than 75 beers from microbreweries in Pittsburgh, with all proceeds benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The event, hosted by Three Rivers Underground Brewers (TRUB), has raised more than $142,000 for the charity since 2003. The event was launched after the daughter of a TRUB club member was born with Cystic Fibrosis, which affects more than 30,000 children and adults in the United States, according to the foundation.

Greg Bender, a guide with PA Brew Tours and home brewer with TRUB, will be giving away samples of some of his homemade beers at the festival.

“I really enjoy the experience of sharing my beer at these things and talking to the people,” Bender said. “That’s my biggest thing is getting some feedback on the beer and getting positive encouragement.”

With more than 75 beers to sample, attendees should come prepared with an idea of what brews they want to try. Bender said there are plenty of interesting concoctions to taste.

“There’s a Poblano pepper beer that’s really good,” Bender said. “There’s going to be one based on Elvis that is a combination of peanut butter and banana flavors. I’m really looking forward to trying that one.”

Though Bender wants attendees to drink responsibly, for those who want to try every beer, there will be a shuttle service with pickup and drop-off points in McMurray, Robinson, Wexford and Vandergrift.

Tickets are available at www.brewingupacure.org for $50. An extra $10 will get you a shuttle ride.
