Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment

A New York Times op-ed by Angelina Joliedisclosed her decision to have a double mastectomy after learning she carries a mutation of a gene that increases her risk of breast cancer.

Last week, researchers at Allegheny General Hospital, in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic published important findings regarding breast cancer.

For the first time genetic testers can be used to predict which women will benefit from the cancer prevention drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene. Leading the research on the study is Dr. Lawrence Wickerham, Director of the Division of Cancer Genetics at Allegheny General Hospital.
