Central New York State of Mind

Darren McGee
/
Finger Lakes Region

Upstate New York covers a lot of territory. From the Adirondacks to the Thousand Islands there's a lot to see in the Empire State. Travel contributor Elaine Labalme scopes out the central New York region, from Cooperstown to the Finger Lakes.

“The Finger Lakes region is fairly close to western Pennsylvania and there’s lots of arts and recreation you’ll want to access there and it’s an easy trip from Pittsburgh,” says Labalme.

With its eleven lakes which, from an overhead view, look like fingers (hence the name). Labalme describes the region as close to heaven for the outdoor set. “You can do everything there – hike bike sail raft.”

People might be surprised to learn the area is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the country where they tend to grow some of the sweeter grapes used in winemaking.

Elaine recommends visiting the Corning Museum of Glass which has one of the best museum stores in the country.

Just above the Finger Lakes in central New York Elaine suggests you visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the Glimmerglass Festival which stages four operas every summer.
