Bracketology and the Rise of March Madness

Workforce production will fall this month as employees around the U.S.become distracted by NCAA basketball. From filling out brackets to entering office pools, March Madness draws an audience more than any other sports tournament.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Sports Writer Emeritus Bob Dvorchak says the event appeals to people that would not normally pay attention to basketball, or even sports in general. “It’s not a sports event anymore, it’s a spectacle. Something that draws people together. Democracy with a small d. Men, women, races creeds, doesn’t matter, you gather around the village square and that’s what everybody’s talking about.”

Dvorchak says the University of Pittsburgh Panthers have a decent chance at advancing after their surprising wins in the ACC tournament. Currently they are the 9th seed and will play Colorado this afternoon.
