Reducing Falls Among PA's Elderly
We’ve all seen or heard some comic take on the commercial of the elderly woman who takes a fall and can’t get up. However, falls among the elderly are no laughing matter. In fact there’s a prevalence of falls among people 65 and older as they age. A new program has reduced falls among the elderly by 17 percent statewide according to a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study authored by our guest Steven Albert, chairman of the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Services. Also taking part in the discussion is Lois Shelton, R.N., M.S.N., the nurse for the state Department of Aging who coordinates the Health Steps for Older Adults program statewide.

That is what gave Joyce Rothermel the impetus to attend a workshop in Harrisburg on food banking, a concept that was new but creating interest around the country.
