The Business of Artisanal Cheese

Artisanal cheese is becoming the latest food trend. Much like craft beers, people are using local ingredients to make their own cheeses. This week contributor Rebecca Harris looks at the business of artisanal cheese.

Harris explains that artisanal cheese -- that is, cheese made by hand and with traditional craftsmanship -- is a big and growing industry, even involving conferences like the American Cheese Society Conference. Some of Pennsylvania’s signature cheese makers include Clover Creek Cheese Cellar and Common Folk Organics, and Pittsburgh has great places to buy cheese, like Pennsylvania Macaronia Co., the East End Food Co-op, Wild Purveyors and Wheel and Wedge.  Pittsburgh even has its own cheesemongers, too.
