The Business of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has helped to transform a downtrodden section of Downtown into a world-class Cultural District. This revitalization through the arts has served as a national model for other cities.

Business contributor Rebecca Harris, Director of the Center for Women's Entrepreneurship at Chatham University, explains the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Cultural District.

Harris says that starting in the 1980s, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, a nonprofit organization, worked to remake a 14-block area downtown into the Cultural District that Pittsburghers know today.

The district attracts over 2 million visitors a year, and its estimated economic contribution is over $300 million per annum.

The Cultural District includes a wealth of cultural destinations, Harris explains, including the Ballet, Opera, the Pittsburgh CLO, the public theater, the symphony, and the August Wilson Center, just to name a few.
