Johnstown Is Hockeyville USA, Today, Tomorrow, Forever

Tour the renovated Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Tomahawks Spokesperson Chard Mearns shows us the updates made to the area as part of winning Hockeyville USA.  The designation based on Internet and phone voting comes with $150,000 to upgrade the winning facility and the opportunity to hose an NHL preseason game.

Dave “Killer” Hanson from Slap Shot the movie.

Dave Hanson played hockey professionally for ten years but he is best known for his role as one of the “Hanson Brothers” in the 1977 film Slap Shot. The movie is roughly based on the Johnstown Jets, a team that was good enough to win a league championship but bad enough that it had to rely on rough play and intimidation to do it.  Dave Hanson was one of the toughest and has some great stories to tell about the team, the filming and his life touring the world as a “Hanson Brother.”

Johnstown Tribune Democrat Editor Chip Minemyer and Tomahawks Play-by-Play Announcer Rick Hull.

When it was first announced that Johnstown was in the running to be named Hockeyville USA the community quickly rallied around the effort.   It seemed like a day could not go by without a story about the voting did not appear in Chip Minemyer’s paper.  The fervor over the effort only grew when Johnstown won the competition.  Now, hockey lovers like Rick Hull are trying to make sure that momentum continues long after tonight NHL preseason game.
