As December Nears, Yinz Better Be Feeling The Yuletide Glow

From tree and light displays to baked goods, music and shopping, the holiday season brings with it scores of Yuletide traditions in Pittsburgh.

For 57 years, they've included the Carnegie Trees display in the Carnegie Museum of Art’s Hall of Architecture. The museum's Women's Committee erects five colossal Colorado spruce trees every winter, curatuting each to a unique theme. This year, members looked to Carnegie International artist Karen Kilimnik to set the tone.

For other must-see displays, parties, markets, tours, events and food, a panel is here to help you out:

Angela Garcia, executive director of Pittsburgh-based nonprofit Global Links, stands outside the WESA studios on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018.

Elsewhere in the program, Pittsburgh-based Global Links will mark its 30th anniversary next year with a new leader at the helm. The nonprofit promotes environmental stewardship and provides medical relief and health improvement efforts across the western hemisphere. Executive Director Angela Garcia took over in April. She says the organization is hoping to expand its resources locally and abroad.

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History displays an expansive collection of gems, minerals, geology and, of course, dinosaurs. But as 90.5 WESA’s Kathleen Davis reports, what’s visible to the public barely scratches the surface of the entire collection.

And Century III Mall in West Mifflin is slated for a sheriff’s sale on Monday. The long declining shopping center’s future is unclear, which doesn’t bode well for a thriving comics store. 90.5 WESA’s Mick Stinelli has more.

The Confluence, where the news comes together, is 90.5 WESA’s daily news program. Tune in weekdays at 9 a.m. to hear newsmakers and innovators join veteran journalist Kevin Gavin, taking an in-depth look at stories important to the Pittsburgh region. Find more episodes of The Confluence here.

Kiley Koscinski covers city government, policy and how Pittsburghers engage with city services. She also works as a fill-in host for All Things Considered. Kiley has previously served as a producer on The Confluence and Morning Edition.
