108 Years Later, Associated Artists Of Pittsburgh Still Finding Spaces And Places For Local Art

It's the oldest, continuously exhibiting visual arts membership organization in the country, boasting alumni like Andy Warhol, Mary Cassat, Samuel Rosenberg and Rochelle Blumenfeld, and works of its 600-plus modern members will be available to view and purchase all over Pittsburgh in 2019.

New partnerships, venues and gallery exhibitions make for exciting adds to the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh's already busy calendar, says executive director Madeline Gent. She just celebrated her first year at the helm, and credits those relationships, in part, to the expanding connectivity of the art world.

"Someone I Love Died From A Drug Overdose," is a book written by Melody Ray that gives advice on how to talk to kids about addiction and overdose.

Elsewhere in the program, WESA’s Sarah Schneider reports on a children’s book that tries to explain overdose deaths to kids with language they can understand.

Officials gave out free naloxone at about 80 locations across Pennsylvania Thursday. The lifesaving drug is used to revive someone during an opioid overdose. WESA's Sarah Boden reports from a giveaway site in Pittsburgh.

And an Allegheny County grand jury report released last week criticized Pittsburgh police command staff, the mayor's office and the union president following two officer-involved shootings in 2017. As WESA's An-Li Herring reports, the DA's office declined to talk about the report, but the campaign to re-elect him did not. Pitt law professor David Harris joins her to discuss the details, timing and irregularity of the report.
