The death of black teenager Antwon Rose at the hands of a white police officer has been a catalyst for social activism in Pittsburgh, and might also stir up past trauma for people of color.

A Pennsylvania man accused of driving through a crowd of people protesting the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager has been charged with reckless endangerment.

The charge against 69-year-old Ronald Hinerman was announced Monday, a day after the North Versailles man allegedly struck at least one protester. Police had closed roadways in North Versailles to allow protesters "unimpeded movement," but protesters eventually moved to a nearby highway and shut down the intersection.

Activists are expected to urge the Allegheny County Council to create a civilian police review board on Tuesday.

Turahn Jenkins announced his bid to challenge Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala on July 2. Less than a week later, some of the progressive activists who initially supported him are calling on him to withdraw, citing Jenkins' ties to a church with deeply conservative views on abortion and homosexuality.

A few hundred people formed a messy circle in an East Liberty intersection, sweating in the 90-degree sun for more than two hours to listen to activists like Nicky Jo Dawson.

“We haven’t even begun,” she told the crowd Sunday.

The gathering is one of many since the death of Antwon Rose, the black teen who was shot and killed June 19 by an East Pittsburgh police officer.

In the wake of the officer-involved death of Antwon Rose last month, state Sen. Jay Costa (D-Forest Hills) said he plans to introduce legislation to improve police training on cultural awareness and use-of-force.

Former public defender Turahn Jenkins of Churchill will run against Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala in 2019, when the 20-year Democratic incumbent is up for reelection.

 

A Democrat, Jenkins announced his candidacy to scores of people who filled a rainy Freedom Corner in the Hill District early Monday evening.

As religious services let out Sunday, churchgoers and members of the clergy gathered in East Liberty to answer a call for people of all faiths to rally around justice for Antwon Rose.

The 17-year-old was shot and killed June 19 by East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld.

Rosfeld was charged Wednesday with criminal homicide.

The local branch of the NAACP held a town hall in Rankin Friday evening to call for consistent policies across the 120 municipal police departments in the Pittsburgh area, following last week's fatal shooting of 17-year-old Antwon Rose by a police officer.

Ten days ago, on June 19, East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld pulled over a car he suspected was connected to an earlier drive-by shooting. Two of the car's occupants fled the vehicle, and Rosfeld opened fire, killing 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr.

Officer Left University Job After Case There Dropped

A Pennsylvania police officer who fired the shots that killed a teenager fleeing a traffic stop left his previous job with a university police force about a month after prosecutors dropped a case against three men he'd filed charges against.

East Pittsburgh Officer Michael Rosfeld, who officials say shot 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr. on Tuesday, worked for the University of Pittsburgh police until early this year, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Saturday.

Saturday marked the fourth day of demonstrations in Pittsburgh to protest the killing of an unarmed, black 17-year-old.

Antwon Rose Jr. was fatally shot by East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld on Tuesday night while fleeing a traffic stop. Many are calling for criminal charges to be brought against Rosfeld -- sentiments that were on display during Saturday's Juneteenth parade to celebrate the end of slavery.

Protesters demonstrated Friday for a third day over the fatal police shooting in Pennsylvania of an unarmed black teen fleeing a traffic stop as they sought to get the attention of a nation engrossed by the immigration debate, and to pressure officials to charge the officer.

Hundreds of marchers chanting "Who did this? The police did this" shut down a Pittsburgh area highway in the early morning hours, and a small group staged a sit-in outside the district attorney's office later in the day.
