Hundreds Of Accused Priests Living Under Radar With No Oversight

Nearly 1,700 priests and other clergy members that the Roman Catholic Church considers credibly accused of child sexual abuse are living under the radar with little to no oversight from religious authorities or law enforcement, decades after the first wave of the church abuse scandal roiled U.S. dioceses, an Associated Press investigation has found.

When post offices close Monday, the last victim compensation funds at Pennsylvania's Roman Catholic dioceses will also close, hours before lawmakers plunge back into a years-old fight over whether to let long-ago victims of child sexual abuse sue perpetrators and institutions that may have covered it up.

Pennsylvania's top state prosecutor says investigations remain underway after 1,862 calls were made to his office's clergy abuse hotline in the 12 months since a landmark grand jury report exposed decades of child abuse within the state's Roman Catholic dioceses.

Pope Francis called for an “all-out battle” against child abuse this weekend at the end of a four-day summit that brought bishops and other church leaders from around the world to the Vatican.

The meeting, focused on clergy sex abuse, came six months after a Pennsylvania grand jury last year detailed accusations over a span of several decades against 300 priests in six diocese across the state.

Survivors of clergy sex abuse within the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh can now apply for compensation. A website for the voluntary program where claims can be submitted went live Tuesday.
