Development of one of the largest urban farms in the U.S. is well underway on the former St. Clair Village site. Crews at the Hilltop Urban Farm have planted 68 fruit and nut trees in the one-acre youth farm, expected to open in April 2019.

After years of studies and plans, Hilltop Urban Farm director Sarah Ashley Baxendell said volunteers are preparing the land and vegetation for the winter, and are excited to start farming. Of the 107 acres available, 23 will be dedicated to agriculture.

On any Pittsburgh city map, there is an unlabeled stretch of land between the neighborhoods of Mt. Oliver and Knoxville.

The Hilltop Alliance has announced a six-year, $1.5 million dollar economic development and community services grant aimed at bringing the struggling neighborhood back to life. Allentown, nestled between Mt. Washington and the South Side Slopes, has a high vacancy rate, nearly double that of the city's median rate and property values about half the city's median value.

Cities are comprised of neighborhoods varying in their socio-economic status, especially Pittsburgh. Each year a city magazine is sure to devote an issue to ranking neighborhoods. However, neighborhoods, like cities, can see their fortunes rise and fall. Case in point, the South Hills neighborhoods of Allentown and Beltzhoover.
