Outgoing board member Terry Kennedy wanted the district to reinstate suspensions for students for non-violent offenses like profane language or repeatedly talking during class. She said the move was prompted by pleas from school principals who reported increased behavior issues as students have returned from a full year of remote learning.

The group Black Women for a Better Education was successful Tuesday night in the Pittsburgh Public Schools board elections. Its endorsed candidates, Tracey Reed and Gene Walker, will represent Districts 5 and 9. Sala Udin was also backed by the group and will begin his second term serving Hill District and East End communities. The board will begin a search for a new superintendent in December after new members are sworn in.
