Celebrate Pride month Downtown and on the North Side, listen to Brahms' fourth and final symphony with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra or check out Rowhouse's Jukebox Cinema — here's what to do in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Theater
It’s the ultimate two-hander: “The Gin Game” depicts two nursing-home denizens whose increasingly complicated relationship unfolds over supposedly friendly games of cards. D.L. Coburn’s 1976 play won the Pulitzer Prize and was twice revived on Broadway. Marianne Schaffer and Mark Yochum — local actors who together attended Catholic School and acted in Scotch & Soda shows at Carnegie Mellon — reunite for a new production at South Park Theatre. It runs Thu., May 29, through June 14.
Comedy
As a home for improv, Arcade Comedy Theater is always a sort of Neighborhood of Make-Believe. But this week, it’s doubling down as popular local troupe Select Start presents an evening of short-form improv inspired by Fred Rogers. Select Start’s Neighborhood includes special guests Aaron Booz and Sarah Schultz. The Fri., May 30, show starts at 9 p.m.
Pride
On Fri., May 30, Pride Month festivities get started early. The new All Out Music Festival at Stage AE on the North Side (formerly Pride on the Shore) is headlined by electronic artist Galantis, with sets by Hayla, Meredith Marks, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Lydia Collins and more. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Pride runs Fri., May 30, through Sun., June 1; highlights include Saturday’s free show in Allegheny Commons Park by David Archuleta and Sunday’s big march and parade Downtown.
Music
Brahms’ fourth and final symphony tops the bill at Heinz Hall this weekend. The Romantic-era classic is joined on the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra program by Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto and the PSO premiere of Sean Shepard’s “Sprout.” Guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the PSO and world-touring Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović. Performances Fri., May 30, Sat., May 31, and Sun., June 1.
Film
Rowhouse Cinema offers Jukebox Cinema, a week of music-based films, from concert docs to stories built around the tunes. On the playlist: Madonna’s 1990 tour doc “Truth or Dare,” Prince in “Purple Rain” (1984), the Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” (1984), David Byrne’s quirky “True Stories” (1986), Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” (1982) and arguably the granddaddy of contemporary music films, “A Hard Day’s Night” (1964). The festival runs Fri., May 30, through June 5.
