For the second time in as many years, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is taking a multi-city bus tour to mark the beginning of the school year, and he is starting his tour in Pittsburgh. "I learn best by seeing," said Secretary Duncan. "I try to get to a few hundred schools every year."
This year's tour through the Upper Midwest carries the theme, "Education and the Economy." "There is nothing more important for our country to get back on its feet again than for students to get a great education," said Duncan. "The vast majority of jobs in the future are going to go to those countries that have the best educated work force."
The tour begin with a stop in Pittsburgh Wednesday and then heads to Erie, PA, Cleveland, OH, Toledo, OH, Detroit, MI, Merrillville, IN, Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. While in Pittsburgh Duncan will meet with Pittsburgh Superintendent Linda Lane and Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers leadership to highlight the district's labor-management collaboration.
Too many districts have dysfunctional relationships with their unions, said Duncan. "You guys are working hard together, everybody is doing some difficult things, everyone is showing some courage and I think the country has a lot to learn from that kind of leadership so we want to shine a spotlight on it."
