Pittsburgh residents will have the opportunity to learn about the appeals process for their newly assessed property values this winter.
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said the city will hold a series of meetings and post website guides about the reassessment appeals process.
Ravenstahl said the city wants to make sure residents "know their options" when it comes to their new property values.
"We've decided to engage them with an outreach campaign and discussion about what the reassessment means to them, and how they can appeal if they feel they've been inaccurately assessed," said the Mayor.
The court-ordered property reassessment in Allegheny County will focus on Pittsburgh and Mt.Oliver first, because the city collects and processes its taxes before most other municipalities. The reassessment team expects to be finished in Pittsburgh before January.
Property values are expected to fluctuate throughout the county, causing many to fear higher tax bills in the coming years.
Ravenstahl said his effort to educate people on how to appeal their reassessed property values is not contrary to the court order.
"It's not for reassessment, it's not against reassessment," said Ravenstahl. "It's really to try to get an accurate reassessment, and have all the homes that are assessed done in an accurate way."
