This weekend, as I recovered from a pre-Thanksgiving party hosted by friends, featuring two fried turkeys, abundant Aguardiente (Colombian anise-flavored liqueur) artichoke dip so good I wanted to slather it on myself (sorry for that image) and an assortment of pies, I wondered what our Thanksgiving show should be about. As I drifted into a food coma, it became clear that for our annual Thanksgiving show, we needed to feature music to get our audience off of the couch, away from the dinner table and moving.
Let me put it this way: If this week's show doesn't make you move, nothing will. We've got some amazing Cuban rhythms, including British producer Giles Peterson's homage to Havana. Also, for the first time in Alt.Latino history (and hopefully this will be a recurring item), we feature Spanish-language reggae. Panama's Kafu Banton, Latin Fresh, Bossy Lion and marching band Banda Centenario come together for a remix that celebrates Panama's Independence Day (November 3rd).
If you're more a fan of reggaeton than reggae, we also have something for you. Puerto Rico's Jamsha El Putipuerko's "El Recoge Escombros" is an example of creative, entrepreneurial, independent reggaeton. Although he's crass and goofy, it's clear he puts a great deal of work into his songs and videos. This song leads us into a discussion about recent controversies regarding payola in Latin music, and more importantly, the meaning of the term "Baja Panti."
And as Felix points out, some of us like to move to a slower, more mellow tune. It occurred to us during this week's taping that for regular Alt.Latino listeners we could play a game called "Who Picked It: Felix Or Jas?" But as Felix pointed out, that would just be too easy. Chilean band Como Asesinar a Felipes is an amazing mix of jazz, electronica and hip hop, which is as mellow as it is energetic, much like our beloved co-host Mr. Contreras.
We've got one of our most fiery shows ever this week. So get off the couch, step away from the table, button up your pants (if you still can), and pump that Alt.Latino real loud. It's good for your health.

¡Pura Candela! Nuevas Canciones Para Ayudarte A Quemar Calorías
Este fin de semana, mientras mi hígado se recuperaba de una cena de Día De Acción De Gracias a la cual me invitaron unos amigos, en la cual figuraban dos pavos fritos, varios pasteles, y abundante Aguardiente, me pregunté que tipo de show deberíamos hacer esta semana. Y decidí que lo mejor sería poner música para que nuestra audiencia se aleje un poco de la comida y queme calorías.
Pongámoslo así: si la música que tenemos en el show esta semana no te pone a bailar, nada lo hará. Tenemos increíbles ritmos cubanos, incluyendo al productor británico Giles Peterson, y su homenaje a la música cubana. Además, por primera vez en la historia de Alt.Latino (y ojalá que sea la primera de muchas) tenemos reggae en español. Desde Panamá tenemos a Kafu Banton, Latin Fresh, Bossy Lion y la Banda Centenario, celebrando el día de la independencia de panamá (3 de Noviembre).
Si te gusta más el reggaetón que el reggae, también tenemos algo para tus oidos. Desde Puerto Rico Jamsha El Putipuerko nos da "El Recoge Escombros" es un ejemplo de música de reggaetón independiente, emprendedora y creativa. Aunque Jamsha tiene un sentido del humor pueril y bizarro, no hay duda que le pone una gran cantidad de trabajo a sus canciones y videos. La canción nos lleva a una conversación acerca de la reciente controversia de la payola dentro de la industria de la música latina, y también sobre un tema sumamente impactante: el uso del término "baja panti."
Asi como Felix nos indica, algunas personas se mueven mas despacio, con más serenidad. La banda chilena Como Asesinar A Felipes no otorga una increíble mezcla de jazz, hip-hop y electrónica. El resultado final es dulce, sereno pero a la vez energético, adjetivos que también pueden usarse para describir a nuestro querido Sr. Contreras.
Esta semana les presentamos uno de nuestros shows mas movidos. ¡Asi que quitate del sillón, y subile el volumen a Alt.Latino!
