County Contoller to Evaluate Reasessment Process

Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner announced on Friday that her office will look at the county's $8 million in reassessment contracts with Tyler Technologies, which provided staff and software to help the county revalue real estate.

Thousands of property owners in Pittsburgh and Mount Oliver have challenged their new assessments.

"I look in my own neighborhood," said Wagner, "and I live in a townhome. I live in a circle of about 70 townhomes, and all of our homes, virtually, have to be the same. Yet you see disparities virtually within my own neighborhood. That's true wherever I go."

The county began mailing new assessments to property owners in the eastern suburbs on Friday.

The last of the new property values will be sent out in March. Wagner estimates her office's review will be complete in April.

County Judge R. Stanton Wettick has said the new assessment numbers will not be used this year to calculate county, municipal, or school district taxes.
