Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a parade and other festivities, check out "In Bed By Ten" dance party or enjoy Texture Ballet Company's "Sound in Motion" — here's what to do in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Theater
Pittsburgh Public Theater stages a true classic. In Edward Albee’s bitterly comic 1962 drama “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” things get wild after a hard-drinking college professor and his bibulous wife invite a younger couple over for late-night cocktails. Broadway veterans Daniel Jenkins and Tasha Lawrence star as Albee’s iconic George and Martha. Longtime Public favorite Pamela Berlin directs. The first performance is Wed., March 19, and the show runs through April 6.
Dance Party
In Bed by Ten, the decade-old recurring dance party for those who can no longer stay out so late, returns Fri., March 14. With DJ MB spinning tunes from the 1970s through the ’00s, this installment will benefit Sisters PGH, a local Black and trans-led nonprofit that provides resources, including transitional housing. It’s at Spirit, in Lawrenceville, and don’t be late — it really will end at 9 p.m.
Music
Two violins and continuo playing works by baroque masters: Those are the roots of Chatham Baroque. “Quintessential Chatham Baroque” features violinists Andrew Fouts and former ensemble member Julie Andrijeski joining Patricia Halverson on viola da gamba and Scott Pauley on theorbo and baroque guitar for violin sonatas by the likes of Vivaldi and Purcell. The three performances are Fri., March 14, at Teutonia Männerchor, on the North Side; Sat., March 15, at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, in East Liberty; and Sun., March 16, at Rodef Shalom Congregation, in Shadyside.
Dance
Texture Ballet Company wraps its 14th season with “Sound in Motion.” The program includes a new collaboration between artistic director Alan Obuzor and Pittsburgh-based musician D.o.B., who’ll provide live R&B music. Also on the program is a new work by Madeline Kendall Schreiber and a classically styled piece by Obuzor, set to music by Bach. The four performances at the New Hazlett Theater run Fri., March 14, through Sun., March 16, and include a daytime kids’ show and Sunday’s matinee.
Festival
Around here, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated largely on the Saturday before the actual holiday. This year, that’s Sat., March 15, and as always the centerpiece is the city’s big St. Patrick’s Day parade, which draws upwards of 350,000 and proceeds all the way across Downtown. Numerous related festivities (some featuring footraces, most featuring beer) are happening around the area, and Visit Pittsburgh has provided a helpful list, as well as a parade guide, here.
Music
With help from the Lift Every Voice Choir and special guest Ray Angry, keyboardist of The Roots, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra offers its annual concert honoring Black music in America. The evening features “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” works by Angry, Margaret Bonds and Nkeiru Okoye, and a tribute to the late jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis. The concert is Sat., March 15.
