The 2025 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is set to kick off this weekend, with events taking place Friday through Sunday. According to marathon organizer P3R, more than 46,000 participants from all 50 states and 24 countries are expected to take part in this.
Marathon road closures and the influx into Pittsburgh of both participants and spectators — not to mention crowds associated with other unrelated events happening in and around Downtown Saturday and Sunday — could make for a more complicated experience navigating the city.
There’s also the possibility of showers and thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday.
Here’s what you need to know:
Road Closures
Friday, May 2
Downtown closures begin at noon on the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood Street and Stanwix Street. Those closures will remain in place through the conclusion of the Marathon on Sunday, May 4.
Saturday, May 3
Road closures for the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine 5K, U.S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile, and Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon will begin at 6:45 a.m. in the North Side and Downtown areas.
You can find a map with more information on specific closures here.
Streets are expected to reopen by 12:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 4
Closures for the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay, and GNC Pittsburgh 4-Mile Fitness Challenge will start Downtown at 1:30 a.m. and continue around the city until approximately 2:30 p.m.
Many Downtown streets will be fully closed on Sunday. Organizers suggest parking outside the closure zones. You can find a detailed map outlining city-wide closures here and one with details on Downtown closures here.
In addition, the marathon course will form a loop around the city that will limit access points to Downtown, the Hill District, Polish Hill, Shadyside, East Liberty and adjacent neighborhoods at various times throughout the day. Motorists heading into the city are encouraged to review this map showing the best routes for getting in and out of Pittsburgh during that time.
Weather Outlook
The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of rain and thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday. That’s after Pittsburgh was pummeled on Tuesday by an exceptionally strong storm, contributing to three deaths and inflicting damage to property throughout the city.
The storm also resulted in a significant number of power outages in the region. A number of homes and businesses remained without power as of Friday morning. You can find more information on current outages on Duquesne Light and West Penn Power’s websites.
Here’s the NWS weather outlook for Pittsburgh this weekend, as of Friday at 11 a.m.:
Saturday
Showers possible through the day, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. High near 70.
Sunday
Showers possible with a chance of afternoon storms. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. High near 70.
