The Community College of Allegheny County Board of Trustees has named Quintin B. Bullock as its ninth president.
Bullock is currently president of Schenectady County Community College in New York. He was appointed unanimously by the Board of Trustees after a national search.
“Dr. Bullock, really as I’ve described him to everyone, has what we were looking for,” said board Chair Amy Kuntz. “Being a community college president is such a unique position. It requires a skill set that is multi-dimensional.”
That skill set includes understanding the needs of the students and how to get them to graduation and understanding the need for partnerships and workforce development with local businesses, industries and unions.
“We need someone who can demonstrate fiscal responsibility, budget management, in an era where we’re seeing shrinking funding sources and declining enrollment,” Kuntz said. “We need someone who understands how to be an advocate for us politically whether it be at the county level, the state level or the federal level.”
Kuntz said budget issues will be an ongoing challenge for the new president, as will responding to President Obama’s call for the nation’s community colleges to double the amount of 2010 graduates by 2020.
“And so one of the things we need to continue to do is to look at the programs that are already in place, to make sure that they’re effective,” Kuntz said, “to eliminate programs that aren’t and to add others that can help us to increase our graduation and certificate rate.”
Bullock replaces Alex Johnson who had held the post since 2008. Over the summer he started as president of Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. Bullock has been named to a three-year term with the option to renew. He is scheduled to begin in March 2014 at an annual salary of $239,000.
