A civil-rights group is raising questions about Pennsylvania's participation in a national program designed to help cull voters with duplicate registrations in different states.
Witold Walczak of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania voiced concern Tuesday about the lack of information from state officials about how they'll oversee the purging of voter rolls under the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program.
In a letter to Secretary of State Carol Aichele, Walczak says he wonders whether the state would relax its standards for identifying and removing duplicate registrations.
State Department spokesman Ron Ruman says the state will obey federal laws requiring written notices and waiting periods before anyone's registration is purged and barring purges within 90 days of any election.
Ruman says officials are only now making plans for the program.
