The music of New York City-based producer and DJ Michna (also known as DJ Egg Foo Young) could be called trombone electronic dance pop. His debut album, Magic Monday, features smooth, down-tempo electronic beats, blended with plenty of urban flair, needle-drops, and Michna's own trombone work. Michna is a skilled trombonist and makes use of the instrument throughout Magic Monday.
The album kicks off with "Triple Chrome Dipped," a song that was featured earlier this year on a free, digital electronic music compilation put out by record label Ghostly International and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Michna serves a blaring trombone intro, before abandoning the brass for a flow of glitchy and groovy hip-hop beats. "Triple Chrome Dipped" seamlessly blends into "Swiss Glide," a song that brings in the funk with bursts of Michna's trombone.
About two-thirds of the way through "Swiss Glide," a voice cuts in to ask, dryly, "Are we going to the dance tonight or what?" Well, for the most part, the music on Magic Monday isn't upbeat enough to find its way into many dance clubs. But songs like the electro-jazz "Skunk Walk" (ending with a terribly out-of-tune but funny East Coaster singing Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline") and the seductively spastic "Raw Paw" could make the most dolorous monday magical.
