Son of musician Wayne Scott, Darrell Scott is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and country star who has worked with an extensive list of artists, including Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Martina McBride,and Guy Clark. After studying poetry and literature at Tufts University, he moved to Nashville to translate his knack for songwriting into the country music business. His abilities quickly grabbed the attention of audiences and musicians alike, immediately establishing himself as one of the top session instrumentalists in Nashville.
From Catie Curtis to Peter Keane, Duke Levine and Lincoln Wright, Scott was being tossed around as one of the town's top collaborators. Contributing vocals, banjo, guitar, bass, pedal steel and dobro, Scott became quite the catch within the country scene.
His career took a steep upward into the late 1990s and early 2000s with several chart hits. Though he continued to work with others, his songs were recorded by Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, which spurred Scott toward a career as a solo artist. After signing with Sugar Hill Records in 1997, he released his debut solo album Aloha From Nashville, which paved the path for his solo success in years to come. In 2002, he was named ASCAP's songwriter of the year, and a few years after he earned two Grammy nominations for album and song of the year.
On his eighth solo album, A Crooked Road, Scott reasserts his claim to fame by playing all of the instruments on the album -- guitar, keyboard, drums, bass, mandolin, lap steel, harp and cello. He's also been performing with Robert Plant's Band of Joy. He takes time out of his busy schedule for an interview with World Cafe host David Dye.
