Community College of Allegheny County will close its Stanwix Street facility after this semester as part of a continuing response to funding cuts of $6 million over the past year ($3.5 million from the state, and $2.5 million from the county). The 1,900 students downtown will find the same course offerings on the main North Side campus, and all CCAC employees will work at other locations.
Spokesperson David Hoovler said the college has cut costs, frozen hiring, eliminated open administrative positions, and refinanced bonds to take advantage of lower interest rates, but tuition and fees will still go up in the spring. There will be a flat rate of $1,400 to $1,500 for students taking 12 to 18 credits. The per-credit tuition rate will increase from $87.25 to $95.50.
Even with the increase, CCAC is very affordable, said Hoovler. Two years at a public 4-year college would cost about $18,000 more, and two years at a private 4-year college would cost about $51,000 more.
Hoovler said other cost savings are being considered for the future.
