Eleanor Friedberger: Bouncing Between Flavors

Eleanor Friedberger has made her name in the past decade or so as half of The Fiery Furnaces, playing alongside her brother Matthew over the course of seven full-length albums and a handful of EPs. That output has been marked by energetic restlessness, with complex arrangements that often burst with shifting themes and time signatures.

In contrast, Friedberger's solo debut, Last Summer, is lighter and more tuneful. It bounces playfully between flavors, with her almost spoken-word singing style set against comparatively sparse backdrops. Lyrically, she employs healthy doses of nostalgia, in some cases playing her current and former selves off of one another in fascinating ways.

Friedberger takes the musical paring-down a step further in this opbmusic session, backing herself on electric guitar for solo versions of songs from Last Summer, including "My Mistakes."
