Essential Public Radio has chosen Pittsburgh native Paul Guggenheimer to help launch its daily news program, Essential Pittsburgh. Guggenheimer is a graduate of Peabody High School and cut his broadcasting teeth at the age of 16 by volunteering at 90.5 FM WDUQ in Pittsburgh.
Guggenheimer is currently hosting South Dakota Public Radio's daily talk show Dakota Midday. He will serve as host for EPR's soon-to-be-launched mid-day program.
"Pittsburgh's always been such a big part of my life," said Guggenheimer upon accepting the job. "From my high school graduation in the Civic Arena, running the very first Pittsburgh Marathon in 1985, and my radio roots at WDUQ, the city holds a special place in my heart. To have the opportunity to come back and work at an exciting new station on a new program just feels right."
Essential Public Radio is still in the process of filling other staff positions for the show.
"Paul brings great experience and range to the table," said Essential Public Radio General Manager DeAnne Hamilton. "As a Pittsburgh native coming home … we believe he'll bring a unique perspective to the story of our city."
Essential Pittsburgh will air Monday through Friday from noon to 1:00 PM and repeat at 8:00 PM. A launch date has not yet been set. The show will feature a mix of live interviews and produced segments with ample opportunity for listener interaction via the phone and the web.
