Amy Helm, daughter of The Band's Levon Helm, grew up surrounded by music. She played for a while in her dad's bands, she helped produce some of his most well-received recordings, including the Grammy-winning Dirt Farmer, and she's a founding member of the band Ollabelle. This summer she steps out on her own with a new debut solo album, Didn't It Rain, recorded in her father's barn in Woodstock, N.Y., home of the Midnight Ramble. It's with her current band, the Handsome Strangers: Byron Isaacs, bass; Daniel Littleton, guitar; David Berger, drums.
Just before leaving for a month-long tour with Mavis Staples and Patty Griffin, Amy and the Handsome Strangers rolled in to Saranac Lake, N.Y. for a Folk Alley Session taping. Here they perform "Rescue Me," the first single from Didn't It Rain, at Beehive Productions studio.
