For several years, there’s been an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), but many education experts are now pushing for an equal emphasis on the creative arts.
A roundtable was held in Pittsburgh earlier this month at the request of state Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa during which community leaders and the Senate Democratic Policy Committee evaluated how to turn STEM into STEAM and what benefits arts education could bring to students.
Shaun Tomaszewski, STEAM coordinator for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, works to integrate the creative arts into existing STEM curriculum. He joins Essential Pittsburgh along with Kymberly Cruz, the program's senior arts education officer, to share thoughts on STEAM education.
