The artists in Getting the Spirit Out, the 2024 Distillery Artist Residency Exhibition have created a group of works that feel distinctly alive — channeling spirits and visualizing the unseen energy around us. Though they all work in very different ways, using a variety of different media and processes, and draw on unique cultural backgrounds, the artists in this year’s Distillery cohort all use their practice to give life — to history, memory, suffering, and joy — and to set their creative spirits free. This year’s Artists-in-Residence are Imani Batts, Armanis Fuentes, Finn Dugan, Joshua Challen Ice, Evangeline Mensah-Agyekum, Sophie Thompson, and Caroline Yoo.

CMP and Music at Third present an immersive evening of music and movement dedicated to innovative 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc. The Voices of Poulenc evokes the emotional connections between his instrumental and dramatic music through two remarkable works: his final piece, the Oboe Sonata, and the solo opera La voix humaine (The Human Voice). Join us to learn the history of a unique composer, enjoy a glass of wine, and experience an unforgettable collaborative production featuring talented Pittsburgh-based performers.
The program begins with Poulenc’s final composition, the Oboe Sonata, which The New York Times described as a “paradoxical mix of the elegiac, the suave and the clever.” Then, Winnica Young and Kato join forces for an immersive staging of La voix humaine, a 40-minute opera work inspired by the Jean Cocteau play. With “beautiful lyricism and powerful drama” (San Francisco Classical Voice), La voix humaine illustrates the resonant intensity of a love unraveling.
Must register to attend, pay-what-you-wish.
City of Asylum’s International Jazz Poetry Month welcomes artists from all over the world, bringing new friends sharing new works to the stage every year. This Jazz Poetry month we are delighted to welcome Milena Casado, an amazing Spanish composer, flugelhorn player, and trumpeter who is no stranger to mixing poetry with her compositions. Milena and her quartet will be sharing newly composed work, joined by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Rae Armantrout, Palestinian poet Yahya Ashour, whose work has been translated and published in eight languages, current fellow at Pitt’s Center for African American Poetry & Poetics program Richard Hamilton, and Oleksandr Frazé-Frazénko, multi-disciplinary Ukrainian artist and City of Asylum writer-in-residence.
Each Jazz Poetry program begins with a 40-minute performance by the band, followed by 30 minutes of collaborative performance with the featured poets. In these collaborations, poets share their work while the musicians interpret and accompany their poetry with jazz, adding a unique, improvisational dimension to each performance.
