A lot of kids have big dreams of stardom, but not everybody can be a singer, rapper or performer. Still, there are aspects of the music and entertainment industry outside of those specialties.
The Community College of Allegheny County’s new partnership with the Homewood-Brushton YMCA aims to inspire young creators with a free, one-semester introductory course on music technology for students ages 16 to 24.
“It covers music-instrument digital interface, ... computer applications [and] outboard equipment used by professional audio engineers," said Vladimir St. Surin, assistant dean at CCAC’s Homewood-Brushton Center. "We have different software, so now students are learning other aspects."
The necessary technology lies just across the street with the YMCA’s Lighthouse Project. Organizers said classes will be small, likely 8-10 students, because each will be assigned a “student success coach.”
“Someone to call the student like, ‘Hey, you didn’t go to class,’ or ‘Hey, did you do your assignment?’ or you know, ‘Is everything going OK at home?’" St. Surin said.
The course will teach music technology, but its greater goal is to get the students interested in college. St. Surin said they will earn college credits, and learn what it’s like be in a college environment.
“It’s like a pipeline, it’s opening a door to folks who probably wouldn’t have even thought about college,” he said.
The course will be offered in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters, but St. Surin said if things go well, they hope to grow the effort.
Tuition, books and other costs are paid for. There is a $25 application fee.
Those interested can apply online or pick up an application at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA. The deadline to apply is Monday, Aug. 21. Classes begin Sept. 9.
