If the needles are falling and you're getting ready to take down the Christmas tree, city and county officials are hoping you'll recycle it and not just leave it at your curbside.
The city of Pittsburgh's Recycling Division and Allegheny County's Department of Parks are again offering tree recycling programs this holiday season. The trees will be mulched and the county will use the mulch in its nine regional parks.
All ornaments, lights tinsel and other decorations must be removed. Trees in bags or netting will not be accepted. Christmas trees left at the curb will be collected by crews but will be included with the regular refuse.
The city of Pittsburgh has four collection sites operating Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the end of January.
- 2nd Division of Public Works in the East End on North Dallas Avenue at Hamilton Avenue
- 3rd Division of Public Works in Hazelwood on Melanchton Avenue off 2nd Avenue
- 5th Division of Public Works in the West End at 1330 Hassler Street next to Herschel Park
- Environmental Services Lot in the Strip District at 3001 Railroad Street
The county is accepting trees from dawn to dusk (normal operating hours) through Jan. 18 at each of its nine parks.
- Boyce Park: parking lot by the wave pool
- Deer Lakes: parking lot by Veterans Shelter
- Harrison Hills: parking lot at intersection of Chipmunk and Cottontail Drive
- Hartwood Acres: parking lot at the mansion
- North Park: parking lot at the swimming pool
- Round Hill: parking lot between Meadow and Alfalfa Shelters
- Settler's Cabin: parking lot by the wave pool
- South Park: parking lot at the swimming pool
- White Oak: parking lot by Poplar Shelter
