90.5 WESA Weekend Watch 4/20 & 4/21

90.5 WESA's Weekend Edition host Noah Brode takes a closer look at some interesting events going on in the Pittsburgh area this weekend:

  • It may be a bit colder than anticipated, but the Allegheny Intermediate Unit still plans to hold its “Day of the Child” celebration at The Waterfront in Homestead today. Held in the Macy’s courtyard from 10:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon, the event features a number of activities, including games, crafts, storytelling and more. Citing the importance of education in a child’s first five, the program will also encourage families to enroll children in preschool, kindergarten, or any other early childhood education program. Again, the “Day of the Child” celebration will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. today in the Macy’s courtyard at The Waterfront in Homestead.
  • Phipps Conservatory is re-opening its “Butterfly Forest” today for the spring season. Butterflies of all sorts will be fluttering about in the Stove Room, including Zebra long-wings and Pennsylvania Monarchs. The Butterfly Forest is free with admission from today through September at Phipps Conservatory in Oakland.
  • Dozens of comic book artists and zine creators will be at the Carnegie Museum of Art today for the “Drawing Power” event. Producers of local comic books and zines will be on hand to display their wares, and notables in the wider world of cartooning and small press will also make presentations at the museum theater. The “Drawing Power” event begins at 10:00 this morning and continues through 5:00 this afternoon.
  • The Carnegie Museum of Art also opens its annual “Associated Artists of Pittsburgh” show with a reception this evening. Work from dozens of regional artists will be displayed starting tonight at the Carnegie Museum’s longest-running show.  The reception begins at 7:00 this evening at the Carnegie Museum of Art and runs through 10:00 tonight. The show will be hung until June 23.
  • The doors to the Pittsburgh Opera will be open tomorrow for a free concert. The show “Spiritual Songs from Around the World” is open to all, and participants are encouraged to pack a lunch for this “brown bag” event. Sunday’s event features a myriad of songs, from Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” to a pair of American spirituals. The doors open at 1:30 at the Pittsburgh Opera building on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District. The free concert runs from 2:00 to 3:00.
  • At noon on Sunday, an artist will be presenting her "Song for Pittsburgh" -- possibly with your help. Five singers will be performing the song, written by artist Jennifer Nagle Myers, at different locations across the city at noon, all accompanied by music. Others are encouraged to learn the lyrics of the song and sing on their own at the same time. Music, lyrics, and performance locations can be downloaded at the artist's website. The project is supported by the Sprout Fund's Connect Your City program.
