A standoff at a Pittsburgh home early Monday ended with a man and a woman dead, authorities said.

Police responded to the home around 1:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a man barricaded inside the residence with a possible hostage, authorities said. Another man who had been inside the home was able to escape and alert police, who tried to negotiate with the barricaded man.

SWAT teams were called to the home and officers were soon able to get inside the residence, where they found a woman dead from a gunshot, authorities said. But the officers retreated and shot several rounds of gas into the house when the barricaded man refused directives to leave the residence.

Officers were able to enter the home again around 5:40 a.m. and found the man dead. His name and the woman's name have not been disclosed.

No other injuries were reported.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the standoff.
