A western Pennsylvania school district has averted a teachers' strike after an overnight bargaining session resulted in a tentative contract.
Teacher in the Greensburg-Salem School District has planned to strike Wednesday morning, halting classes for nearly 3,000 students in this district 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.
The last contract expired in July and the sides last met in October, before beginning a last-ditch bargaining session at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Nine hours later —by 3 a.m. Wednesday — the school superintendent was reaching out to Pittsburgh-area media outlets to announce a deal. That was done so news outlets could alert students that classes would be in session.
Details of the deal have not been disclosed. It must still be ratified by a union vote and the school board.
