90.5 WESA Weekend Watch 7/6 & 7/7

This weekend enjoy the diverse genres of music at the Deutschtown Music Festival. A wide range of styles will play throughout the day, including jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass, acoustic, German, and electronic. Musical performances will occur at both indoor and outdoor venues. Featured performers include Meeting of Important People, Grand Piano, and Chet Vincent and the Big Bend. The daytime portion of the festival will be family-friendly, beginning at 2 p.m., while the evening programming starting at around 8 p.m. will be more adult focused. Music will play throughout the day this Saturday on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

Although it is open year-round for self-guided tours, this Sunday the USS Requin docked outside of the Carnegie Science Center will feature guided, all-access Tech Tours. Tours of the Cold War-era Navy submarine will feature a behind-the-scene look at spaces rarely visible to the visiting public. Detailed looks will be taken at life on a military submarine, and tours will climb into the conning tower to view the periscope. Tours are available upon reservation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Carnegie Science Center on the North Shore, and look for these special tour days to recur twice monthly into September.

The Stars at Riverview concert series continues this Saturday with artist Eric Johnson. Bring a lawn chair or spread a blanket along Observatory Hill for a night of free music. Following the concert, you can stick around for Dollar Bank’s Cinema in the Park at dusk, with a family friendly movie that everyone can enjoy. This Saturday’s Cinema in the Park features the Pittsburgh-filmed summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. The concert begins at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Riverview Park, followed by Cinema in the Park at dusk around 8:30 p.m.

The Gallery 4 is featuring a new show for the month of July, opening this Saturday. In Kawaii Wa: The Code of Cuteness, Tokyo-based artist Hiromi examines the Japanese notion of fragility and innocence--named “kawaii”--through her paintings of doll-like young women. The former children’s book illustrator adds flowers and birds to further explore kawaii’s root concepts. This Saturday features the show’s opening reception at The Gallery 4 in Shadyside from 7 to 11 p.m., and look for the exhibit to continue throughout the month of July.

This Saturday you can see two shows for the price of one at the Improv Double Feature. Each month, two of Pittsburgh’s best improv groups get together to fabricate scenes based on the audience’s suggestions. The one-of-a-kind experience this month features Hipsterpotamus, an “ironic hipster comedy duo,” and Midseason Replacements, a group which improvises a full sitcom episode in front of the audience. The late night show begins Saturday at 10:30 p.m. at the Cabaret Theater at Theater Square downtown.
