The second wave of winter weather moved into the Pittsburgh area early Saturday morning leaving about five inches of fresh snow on the ground by the time it left.
The National Weather Service says another storm could drop as much as an inch on the Pittsburgh region over night Saturday into Sunday.
Pittsburgh Public Works crews were seen throughout the city Saturday morning trying to stay ahead of the snow. Most major arteries remained clear but some side streets remained untouched for hours.
PennDOT crews were also out in force. Trucks were pretreating the interstates overnight and began working the state routes as the snow fell. State crews are working 12-hour shifts and will continue to stay on the roads as needed according to PennDOT spokesperson Jim Struzzi who also warns drivers to use caution, especially on ramps and overpasses.
For a time the speed limit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike from the Ohio Line to the Morgantown Interchange (Exit #298) was reduced to 45 mph due to snow accumulations.
Throughout the day Pittsburgh International experienced long delays and cancelations. Most of the cancelations were on flights coming from the east where the storm continued to dump snow for hours after it had left Pittsburgh.
Some businesses in the region opted to not open or delayed opening as the storm rolled through. A handful of school districts and non-profits canceled or postponed activities.
