Light of Life will serve Thanksgiving dinner at its North Side mission on E. North Avenue Thursday from 1-6p.m. to anyone in the community who wants to have a meal and will deliver meals to the elderly and disabled at 13 high rises in Pittsburgh.
Additionally, the organization is distributing coats to those in need. Jessi Marsh, Development Director for Light of Life, said the coat drive, called “Jackson’s Jackets,” started with a boy who was influenced by a cold homeless person outside of a Pittsburgh Penguins game four years ago.
“It’s an interesting story there, just how this family saw a need and thought about what they could do to help the people in their community,” Marsh said. “We’re really grateful to that family.”
Marsh says while people wait for their Thanksgiving meal, they can pick out coats for themselves or others in a tent outside the mission while sipping on hot chocolate or hot apple cider. Marsh said Light of Light doesn’t need any more volunteers for Thanksgiving, but could use manpower any other day of the year when they care for the hungry and homeless.
Public Relations coordinator for Light of Life, Kate Wadsworth, said 200 volunteers will serve about 1,500 people Thanksgiving meals.
