With the New Year comes resolutions. While many people are sticking to the old "losing weight" or "getting healthy" resolution, the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) hopes some New Year’s resolutions will include actions that will be good for the environment.
PRC Western Regional Director Dave Mazza said you can “reduce” by buying only what you need, whether it’s paint, fertilizer, cleanser, etc.
“Reuse” means finding a group that will take used building materials, medical equipment—even pet supplies.
In addition to participating in the usual recycling of bottles, cans and paper, Mazza said recycling electronics is very important. "As of January 24, 2013, consumers are no longer going to be able to put certain electronics out for regular trash pickup. They're going to have to find ways to have these materials recycled. The recyclers in the Pittsburgh area that are handling these materials have to be certified by the DEP." The Covered Device Recycling Act applies to computers and peripherals, monitors, and televisions.
The PRC said the average adult will generate about 90,000 lbs. of trash in a lifetime.
