State Of The Hill District Event To Provide An Update On Community Development

The Hill Community Development Corporation is holding a State of The Hill District event on Saturday.

Marimba Milliones, president of the CDC, said this event will be an opportunity for members of the community to learn about recent developments in the Hill District.

Milliones will discuss the Centre Avenue Redevelopment Plan at the event. She says it’s a plan that “honors the cultural legacy of the Hill District but contextualizes it in the future and the market that we can expect today.”

The Corridor runs from Crawford Street to Reed Street. Milliones said they have segmented the corridor into three distinct sections.

“One that will celebrate arts and culture, one that will celebrate kind of  entrepreneurial opportunity and eclectic development opportunities for small businesses and one that will celebrate the ecological and community empowerment angle – which means we’ll be looking at a do-it-yourself district for one part of the avenue,” she said.

There has been redevelopment in the area in recent years following years of urban renewal and blight. Now, there’s some new housing, a grocery store, the opening of the YMCA and the library.

“The Hill District is not a fix-in or a meat on a piece of bread between Downtown, Oakland and the East End, it’s a very distinct community that we want to celebrate and we think that the Centre Avenue plan captures that,” said Milliones.

The free event will be held at the Kaufmann Center on Centre Avenue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be presentations, music and food.
