While PennDOT and local authorities are dealing with a destructive landslide that collapsed a stretch of Route 30 near East Pittsburgh and forced 30 people from their homes, the city of  Pittsburgh continues to address  a “record year for landslides” in the city.

A road that collapsed during a landslide in western Pennsylvania that prompted the evacuation of an apartment complex will be closed for months, state transportation officials said.

Authorities say a small fire believed to be due to contraband prompted a partial evacuation at the Allegheny County Jail and sent a guard to a hospital.

Allegheny County officials said the blaze at the Downtown jail broke out at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday within a cell and is "believed to have been started by contraband in that cell."

All 80 inmates of the pod were evacuated to another area of the jail and guards had the fire out before Pittsburgh firefighters arrived.

Authorities say a train hit a tractor-trailer in western Pennsylvania, spilling the truck's cargo of hydrochloric acid and injuring one person.

Emergency dispatchers in Washington County say one person was airlifted to a hospital after the crash shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Centerville.

Officials said a hazardous materials team was called to the site and roadways in the area were closed. About 15 residents were being evacuated.

A small explosion in a lab at science complex at the University of Pittsburgh prompted a brief evacuation, officials said Wednesday.

University spokesman Joe Miksch said the blast happened at about 2:45 p.m. in the Life Sciences Annex in the Clapp, Langley and Crawford Hall complex, which houses the biological sciences and neuroscience department.

About 1,000 residents of a small Pennsylvania town spent the night in area hotels following a freight train derailment and fire that forced their evacuation.

Bedford County public safety crews and workers from CSX, the train's owner, helped residents in Hyndman retrieve pets and prescription medicines after they were ordered out of their homes Wednesday. Hyndman is about 100 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

At least 32 rail cars derailed, some containing hazardous materials.

A large, smoky chemical warehouse fire near Pittsburgh forced residents from about 70 nearby homes and injured multiple people.

Emergency crews on Tuesday moved people living near Weatherford Engineered Chemicals in Leetsdale to a high school gymnasium as a precaution.

The evacuation order has since been lifted, according to county officials.
