Pittsburgh Trail Recognized by National Geographic

A local gem is being recognized nationally as being a worldwide go-to for the fall.

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) was named as one of National Geographic's 10 "Best Fall Trips 2012."  When the trail is completed, the 150-mile path, which hooks up with the C & O Canal Tow Path in Cumberland, Maryland,  will connect bikers, hikers and all non-motorized traffic from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.

Linda Boxx, President of the Allegheny Trail Alliance said there are plenty of activities to participate in along the GAP.

"Most people bicycle the Great Allegheny Passage, but you can certainly take day trips, walk in the woods, Ohiopyle State Park is a great place to enjoy the Great Allegheny Passage," Boxx said.  "Even some of the late season kayakers and canoers can enjoy the fall foliage."

Boxx said there are good reasons why the GAP was recognized as an autumn go-to location.

"We have beautiful mountains and rivers and great vegetation," Boxx said.  "It's just a very beautiful region."

The Alliance has been recognized by National Geographic in the past as well, and Boxx said they are "honored."  Other trips National Geographic recommends for the fall are Hokkaido in Japan, Alba in Italy, and Arendtsville in Pennsylvania.
