From King Cake to Fish Fry, the Business of Lenten Season

It’s Fat Tuesday, or as it’s known in New Orleans, Mardi Gras.

This celebration prior to Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent) is celebrated in high style with beads, baked goods and more.

Business contributor Rebecca Harris explained the business and significance of Fat Tuesday and the religious season of observance.

For two centuries Fat Tuesday has been a legal holiday in New Orleans. Harris said some of the traditional products connected with Fat Tuesday include pancakes, king cake (don’t forget the baby!) and Paczki pastries.

If you’ll be out and about for Fat Tuesday, Harris recommends the Mardi Gras Gala black tie event at the Westin Convention Center, which benefits the Epilepsy Center.

And if you’re really going to be exploring Pittsburgh, Harris said “Diesel Club lounge sounds like a lot of fun.”

After Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and fish fry season at area churches and community buildings.

“A lot of companies have gotten into this as well,” said Harris “So we’re seeing places like Wendy’s and KFC offering special fish sandwiches during this season. You don’t want to alienate your customers!”
