Friday Rundown: Documenting Fracking Concerns

These topics air Friday June 20, 2014 at noon and 8pm on 90.5 WESA. Join the conversation LIVE between 12pm & 1 pm weekdays at 412-246-2002.

Silenced on Shale Drilling

Two retirees from the Pennsylvania Department of Health say its employees were silenced on the issue of Marcellus Shale drilling. The two former employees, a community health nurse and a staffer in the Bureau of Epidemiology say that staff at state health centers and district offices were instructed NOT to return calls from residents who expressed concerns about natural gas development. StateImpact Pennsylvania's Katie Colaneri joins us.

Two for the Road

Our guests Melissa Troutman and Joshua Pribanic are setting off on a summer tour to call attention to hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking. The journalists co-directed the documentary Triple Divide which deals with fracking in PA. They’re taking the film to communities throughout the country that are dealing with their own fracking issues. Before heading out on the road they’ll stop by Studio A for a conversation about fracking and how they’re crossing the country without using any gasoline.

Frack Water

This weekend the environmental program The Allegheny Front begins a series on water contamination caused by fracking. Reporter Reid Frazier joins us in Studio A. He'll provide us with an overview of the series which will address concerns over radiation, waste water and more.
