State lawmakers are recognizing Veteran’s Day by highlighting several measures passed in recent months that benefit Pennsylvania’s men and women in uniform.
Among the measures touted is a law that provides additional revenue for veterans programs. The Veterans Trust Fund will get $1.7 million from the sale of the Scotland School for Veterans Children in Franklin County.
Republican state senator Lisa Baker of Luzerne County also pointed out a PennDOT effort. The department will soon begin asking for contributions from Pennsylvanians. “Within a year, every motorist will be given a chance to donate three dollars when they renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration,” Baker said.
Republican state Representative Jeff Pyle of Armstrong County said the special license plates honoring veterans will be available at PennDOT within the next year and a half.
“Please play up these license plates. For a veteran, it costs nothing other than the regular license plate renewal,” Pyle said.
Retiring Republican state Senator Mary Jo White applauded the work of the Senate’s committee for Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness. She said the panel has done what it set out to do.
“And that is not just say thank you to our veterans, but to thank them in a very tangible way, by doing positive things for them that make life better for themselves and their families,” White said.
The funds support grants to veterans’ organizations as well as the maintenance of monuments honoring veterans in the commonwealth.
