From the wurst to the brats, Oktoberfest celebrations are just around the corner. Travel contributor Elaine Labalme tours festivals from Ohio to Texas, recommending the best and most entertaining German heritage festivities.
Cincinnati, Ohio – This festival brings in over half a million people to watch the “Running of the Wieners” (a Dachshund dog race) and the World’s Largest Chicken Dance with guest, George Takei of Star Trek fame.
Columbus, Ohio – While the city doesn’t actually host an Oktoberfest, the German village has a thriving restaurant and brewing scene.
New Baunfels, Texas –Home of the Wurstfest, the city hosts what is consistently one of the top festivals in the state.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin –Hosted by the Bavarian Soccer Club, this Oktoberfest touts a Yodeling competition and an Oktoberfest Queen contest.
