How Pittsburgh Organizations Are Bringing Hollywood To The Steel City

From film festivals, to movies and TV shows, Pittsburgh has become one of Hollywood's leading locations for motion picture and television production.

This week contributor Rebecca Harris looked at the business of filmmaking in the Steel City.

Pittsburgh has a variety of organizations that help bring Hollywood the the city, which are listed below. These organizations work with different groups and people in the community to make it possible for films and television shows to come to life in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Film Office: The PFO serves as an economic generator around Pittsburgh, providing information information on the region, vendors and crew to help facilitate filming in the area. They also provide assistance to local filmmakers as well as the local film industry.

Women in Film and Media: This Pittsburgh organization is dedicated to improving the status of women in film, television and other screen-based media.

Steel Town Entertainment Project: This organization works to strengthen industry connections, educate youth, discover talent and help to invest in projects as well as to ensure that Pittsburgh is a sustainable environment for the film industry.

"They believe that Pittsburgh has what it takes to be a key player in creating a world class entertainment center," Harris said about the goals of the Steel Town Entertainment Project.

Film Festivals: Pittsburgh hosts several film festivals throughout the year, like the Three Rivers Film Festival, put on by the Pittsburgh Filmmakers and the JFilm Festival will be showing 17 Jewish-themed films from more than eight countries.

Film schools: Colleges like the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon and Point Park offer both bachelor and masters degrees in filmmaking, writing, acting and production.
