The Business of Food Banks

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's mission is to feed people in need and mobilize our community to eliminate hunger.

Their vision is for a hunger-free southwestern Pennsylvania. This week contributor Rebecca Harris looks at food banks in the region.

The need for food assistance continues to go up, while donations and public assistance continue to decrease, Harris notes.

According to Harris, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has about 400 member agencies that serve roughly 360,000 people in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Members of the public who want to assist food banks can volunteer for the Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Food and cash donations can also be made at the Peoples Gas Holiday Fair, where donations are being accepted in downtown Pittsburgh throughout the month of December.
