The New Girl's Fab Five List for Museum Hopping

While the overcast days of winter may tempt you to stay inside and binge watch your favorite programs, it’s a good time to get out and see some great museum exhibits. From major metropolitan areas to smaller cities there are some interesting museums to be found.

This week travel contributor Elaine Labalme suggests museums with great exhibits to enjoy on a winter’s day.

When considering a museum visit, Labalme explains, it’s worth considering its size: smaller museums might have a tendency to be less busy than bigger ones, she says.

One museum that Labalme recommends is the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., which tends to be busier in the summer than wintertime. The story of the Holocaust, she says, is “very comprehensive and presented in a variety of media.”

The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA includes paintings, a sculptural garden, and more. Currently the Michener has an exhibit on astrophotography.

Labalme describes Transformer Station in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood as an unassuming museum. Known for its photography, Transformer Station also includes other exhibits, including an installation called Shockwaves that’s based on a 80-minute film loop.

The Wexner Center, which is on the campus of the Ohio State University in Columbus, has plays, an exhibit on Polish cinema curated by Martin Scorcese and another exhibit highlighting Moroccan musicians.

Closer to home is the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg. The museum includes some 3,400 items and has a current exhibit in which portraits are juxtaposed with still lifes.
